COMPREHENSIVE TMJ TREATMENT
Understanding Tempro-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (also known as TMD)

The Tempro-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is located close to your ear, between your upper and lower jaw. It’s a complex hinge held together by ligaments and muscles that connects your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull, allowing the lower jaw to move up and down, and side to side. Muscle, bone, and cartilage work together for easy and comfortable facial movement so we can speak, eat, swallow, yawn, and smile.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint when there is a problem with any of the parts of the joint, including the muscles, ligaments, or articular disk - or if there is a problem with the way the teeth come together (the bite). Temporomandibular Joint Disorder can develop due to arthritis, bruxism (tooth grinding), genetics, an injury or infection near the jaw, a misaligned bite, or a combination of factors. Sometimes the cause is unclear.

TMD could be indicated if you suffer from any of these symptoms:
• Painful chewing
• Persistent pain and discomfort around the TMJ or in the face or neck
• Earaches or ringing in the ears
• Changes in bite alignment
• Muscle spasms near the jaw
• Clicking, popping, or grating noises when the jaw moves
• Jaws that are limited in movement or lock open or shut

Dr. Ahadian received advanced TMJ training at the prestigious Dawson Academy, equipping her with the knowledge and tools to diagnose and treat even the most complex jaw issues.

If you’re experiencing jaw pain, clicking, or discomfort, she performs a comprehensive exam - including a detailed health history and diagnostic records - to identify the root cause.

Dr. Ahadian then creates a custom treatment plan designed to relieve your pain and restore optimal jaw function.

Our office offers EMFACE® Functional, an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment designed to support jaw muscle relaxation and improved function - - without surgery, injections, or downtime.

What Is EMFACE® Functional?
EMFACE® Functional combines High-Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation (HIFES®) with radiofrequency (RF) energy to address the muscular components commonly associated with TMJ dysfunction. This treatment focuses on improving muscle coordination, reducing excessive muscle tension, and supporting healthier jaw movement.

How EMFACE® Functional Works
Treatment applicators are placed over the masseter and temporalis muscles, which play a critical role in jaw movement and stability. HIFES® delivers controlled electrical stimulation to help re-educate overactive jaw muscles often involved in clenching and grinding, and RF energy gently warms the targeted tissues to promote increased blood flow, support muscle relaxation, and reduce localized tension.

Benefits of EMFACE® Functional
Reduce symptoms associated with jaw muscle spasms
Support management of TMJ-related discomfort
Improve muscle coordination and jaw function
Increase localized blood flow
Maintain or improve mandibular range of motion

What to Expect with EMFACE® Functional
No needles or injections
No anesthesia or medications
No downtime
Treatment performed in-office

A TMJ Splint is a removable dental appliance that covers several or all of the upper or lower teeth and worn to reduce the stress on the jaw. This allows the muscles to function properly and may reposition the lower jaw to fall properly into the TMJ socket.
