Understanding Tempro-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (also known as TMD)

The Tempro-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is located close to your ear, between your upper and lower jaw. It’s a complex hinge held together by ligaments and muscles that connects your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull, allowing the lower jaw to move up and down, and side to side.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint when there is a problem with any of the parts of the joint, including the muscles, ligaments, or articular disk - or if there is a problem with the way the teeth come together (the bite).

A TMJ Splint is a removable dental appliance that covers several or all of the upper or lower teeth and worn to reduce the stress on the jaw. This allows the muscles to function properly and may reposition the lower jaw to fall properly into the TMJ socket.
